Turmeric is a flowering plant having the scientific name Curcuma longa. And it belongs to the Ginger family known as Zingiberaceae. Further, the roots of the plant are used for various preparations like cooking, medicines, religious rituals, etc. The plant is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, which requires temperatures between 20 and 30 °C and a considerable amount of annual rainfall to thrive. And, it is almost established now that turmeric can help in fighting COVID-19 for all of us. Because it has got antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that strengthen our immunity.
The Ministry of AYUSH (Government of India) has recommended turmeric milk for enhancing immunity. As we know, that milk mixed with turmeric is a popular and authentic way of traditional healing in many homes worldwide for injuries, easing pain, and to fortify the health of the people in general. Because the key active ingredient of turmeric, ‘Curcumin’ has multiple life-enhancing properties and is packed with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. That is why it is firmly believed that turmeric can help in fighting COVID-19 effectively.
Benefits of Turmeric: –
– Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory compound :
Inflammation is incredibly important for various reasons. Because it helps our body fight foreign invaders like viruses. And also it has a role in repairing the damages caused by viruses and other pathogens. Although acute, short-term inflammation is beneficial because it helps in enhancing immunity, but it can become a major problem once it goes chronic. Because it may inappropriately attack our body’s own tissues. Hence, scientists believe that chronic, low-level inflammation plays a major role in almost all chronic diseases. And, these include heart disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer’s, and various degenerative conditions. Curcumin the main ingredient of turmeric is strongly anti-inflammatory. In fact, it’s so powerful that it can be as effective as some anti-inflammatory drugs without any risk of side effects.
– Turmeric Boosts The Antioxidant Capacity Of The Body :
It is believed that oxidative damage is one of the mechanisms behind aging and many diseases like COVID-19. It involves free radicals, highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons. Free radicals tend to react with important organic substances, such as fatty acids, proteins, or DNA. The main reason antioxidants are so beneficial is that they protect our bodies from free radicals. Curcumin in turmeric is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure. In addition, curcumin boosts the activity of our body’s own antioxidant enzymes. Hence, its impact on free radicals is magnified.
– Turmeric Improves Brain Functions:
Neurons or nerve cells are an electrically excitable cell that receives, processes, and transmits information through electrical and chemical signals. Also, they respond to one particular type of stimuli such as touch, sound, or light and all other stimuli affecting the cells of the sensory organs, and converts it into an electrical sign. One of the main drivers of this process is a brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is a type of growth hormone that functions in our brain. Many common brain disorders have been linked to decreased levels of this hormone, including depression and Alzheimer’s disease. And interestingly, curcumin in turmeric can increase brain levels of BDNF. By doing this, it may be effective in delaying or even curing many brain diseases and age-related deterioration in brain function. Depression is also linked to reduced levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Hence, turmeric can also help in dealing effectively with depression caused due to stress and anxiety. There is also some evidence that curcumin in turmeric can boost the brain neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, the hormone that is responsible for the good feeling in us. It becomes more important at this time because of lockdown and restricted movement due to COVID-19 these mental issues are coming up frequently. Hence, we can conclude that turmeric can help in fighting COVID-19 effectively.

-Turmeric Lowers The Risk Of Heart Disease:
Heart diseases are the major causes of death in the world. Perhaps the main benefit of turmeric when it comes to heart disease is improving the function of the endothelium, which is the lining of your blood vessels. It’s well known that endothelial dysfunction is a major cause of heart disease. And it involves the inability of our endothelium to regulate blood pressure, blood clotting, and various other related factors. Again, several studies suggest that turmeric leads to improvements in endothelial function. One study found that it’s as effective as exercise.
– Turmeric can Help Prevent And Treat Cancer:
Cancer, as we know, is a terrible disease responsible for many more deaths than any other disease. There are many different forms of cancer, which have several things in common. Some of these appear to respond positively by turmeric supplements. Turmeric has been found as a beneficial herb in cancer treatment. Several studies have shown that turmeric can prevent cancer growth, development, and spread at the molecular level. However, there is evidence that it may prevent cancer from occurring in the first place, especially cancers of the digestive system like colorectal cancer.
Although long used in Ayurvedic medicine, where turmeric is also known as Haridra, there is no high-quality clinical evidence for using turmeric or its constituent, curcumin, to treat any disease, according to the US Food and Drug Administration which has not approved it for treatment of any kind.

Side Effects :
Usually, turmeric does not cause any serious side effects. But, some people may experience stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, or diarrhea. In one report, a person who took very high amounts of turmeric, over 1500 mg twice daily, experienced a dangerous abnormal heart rhythm. However, it is unclear if turmeric was the actual cause of the problem.
It is not always enough to consume only Turmeric. Because without fat the active component in turmeric has a difficult time getting absorbed and making it into the bloodstream. Hence, it is advisable to use it with fat because turmeric is fat-soluble.
The permissible dosages of various forms of turmeric (for adults): Cut root: 1.5 – 3 g per day; Dried, powdered root: 1 – 3 g per day; Standardized powder (curcumin): 400 – 600 mg, 3 times per day; Fluid extract (1:1) 30 – 90 drops a day; Tincture (1:2): 15 – 30 drops, 4 times per day
